What colour band should I choose for my engagement ring?

Jun 29, 2020 | Engagement Rings, Engagement Stories, Ring Designs

Choosing an engagement ring (whether for yourself or your partner) is an exciting task. However, it can also be a tricky one with many things to consider. Aside from picking the jewel, the style and design of the ring and selecting the metal for the band itself can be a complex decision! Previously, most choices were limited to just yellow and white gold but these days, couples can now choose from a range of metals including yellow gold, white gold, rose gold, platinum and silver. So, how do you choose the perfect metal and colour for your ring?

Match your skin tone

The first thing you may want to consider is the type of metal that best suits your skin tone. Your skin will either be light, medium or dark.

If you have a warm skin tone, yellow gold and coppery colours will complement your complexion and look beautiful. Those with cool skin tones will benefit from white metals such as silver, platinum or white cold. And what about rose gold as a metal? Because it falls in between yellow and white metals, this gorgeous metal is perfect for anyone!

How much use will your ring get?

If you’re a fairly active person who intends on wearing their ring every day, you may want to choose a strong and durable metal like platinum or 18ct gold, as both can withstand a high level of wear and tear

We recommend removing your rings and storing them securely for any particularly hard wearing activities – gardening, weights at the gym etc, as all metals are susceptible to scratches from wear and tear.

How much upkeep will you invest in your ring?

Regardless of the type of metal you choose for your engagement ring, you will need to bring your ring in for regular cleaning throughout the years. However, the type of metal you choose can affect how your ring withstands the test of time. Generally speaking, however, all you will need to do is get your ring cleaned or polished very occasionally.

All metals over time will require some level of upkeep to keep them looking brand new, and its a great idea to bring them in every 6 months or so to check the settings and have a complimentary ring clean (plus we like seeing you again!)

What is your style?

Of course, the most important thing to consider when choosing a metal for your engagement ring is your personal style. It’s very likely that you already have a preference for the sorts of metals you like to wear so take a look at your existing jewellery collection. Do you lean towards cooler hues and silver jewellery, or do you prefer warmer tones and the burnished shine of gold? Do you like the classic look of a diamond paired with yellow gold or the modern aesthetic of white gold? Or maybe your heart leans towards the romance and unique colours of rose gold.

Regardless of what you decide, your engagement ring is something you will wear for the rest of your life, so make sure to choose a ring that is just right for you and will make you happy for years to come.
