The circle has always been the symbol of eternity in many ancient cultures as it has no beginning and no end. The oldest recorded exchange of wedding bands was around 4800 years ago in Egypt. The symbol of marriage during that time came in the form of simple woven or braided reeds.
As the tradition lives on, people searched for sturdier materials. After woven reeds, bone or leather became popular.
Romans soon adopted this tradition but adapted it to their own customs. Instead of offering a ring as a symbol of love to a woman, Roman men used rings to lay a ‘claim’ to their women. To symbolise permanence and strength, they used iron. This civilisation marked the first recorded use of metals as wedding rings.
Around 860AD, Christians began using rings in marriage ceremonies. The rings during this time are intricate and engraved. In the 13th century, the church moved away from these ‘hedonistic’ rings and went back to simpler rings.
Over time, through different cultures, the designs of wedding bands have flourished. Some wealthy Middle Eastern men gave puzzle rings. These would fall apart when taken off. This is how they know if the wife has become unfaithful and removed the ring. It takes the right skills and knowledge to put together the puzzle ring again.
Diamonds only really became popular in wedding bands after the 1800s. People wanted a diamond wedding band to match their diamond engagement rings.
The common theme throughout history is that rings are a symbol of everlasting love. And today, there is a huge range of designs and options available for everyone.
Custom Design your Wedding Band to Match your Unique Engagement Ring
At MAX Diamonds, we have a variety of precious metal wedding ring designs and styles. You can also choose to have bands with or without diamonds. It is helpful to book an appointment to come in to try on the various styles to see which you like the most.
An elaborate diamond-encrusted engagement ring goes well with a gold or platinum band. A simple traditional solitaire might look amazing with a band that has a row of smaller diamonds.
The choice of the wedding band is completely up to you. Many couples come in and make an afternoon or evening out of it by booking an appointment with us. We can talk about designs while sipping champagne and even head out for a meal afterwards.
