The most important decisions in your life tend to revolve around family – deciding who to marry, buying a home, having kids… COVID may have put many lives on hold, but that hasn’t stopped Australian couples from finding love and tying the knot! You may be expecting an engagement ring in the near future, but the question is – when is your significant other going to pop the question?
How long after dating should I get engaged?
Some people think that couples should date for a set amount of time before deciding to spend the rest of their lives together. However, the fact is that love waits for no man (or woman), and the length of time you’ve been dating doesn’t necessarily correlate with the success of your marriage.
Every couple moves at their own pace, and the decision to get married is intensely personal. And so, although most couples will date for two or more years before getting engaged, there’s nothing to stop you from popping the question if you know you’ve met the one!
Does Australia have an “engagement season”?
Here in Australia, our wedding season extends from September to May, with March, April, October and November (Autumn and Spring) being the most popular months for ceremonies. For engagements, however, the seasons are flipped, with Summer and Winter being the most popular months to get engaged.
In the US, surveys have shown that December is the most popular time for people to pop the question, with 14% of respondents getting engaged at the end of the year. While we don’t quite have the same seasons in Australia, we have still found that the holiday season from December to January is peak proposal time. Wherever you are in the world, this period of the year tends to be a time when holidays are celebrated, families get together, and people are in a positive mood.
What is the best time of year to propose?
You might be asking yourself, “When should I propose to my loved one?”, “Which month is best for engagement?” or “What date should I propose?”.
The fact is that while there might be an ideal time of the year to hold a wedding, proposals and engagements are in style all year round. Whether you decide to go for a Spring proposal picnic, pop the question on a hike in Summer, hide a diamond ring in some Autumn leaves or get down on one knee in front of a fireplace in Winter, your proposal is special and meaningful to you – and that’s what matters.
